"Flying, to experience total freedom. To escape the delusion of every day .... In your life you merely experience a few absolute unforgettable moments. When you take off, for the first time, with a supple wrist movement, a plane from the runaway and the world disappears slowly under you. Next to you the instructor sits with arms crossed; you fly the plane yourself !!!"

Flight school De Kempen operates at Kempen Airport and has a broad experience in training private pilots. For private pilots there are two licenses, you can be trained for a Light Aircraft Pilot License (LAPL) or a Private Pilot License (PPL).

To start the pilot training, there are no demands concerning age. To fly Solo you have to be at least 16 years and at least 17 years to apply for the practical examination. There is also no maximum age for starting a pilot training, however you have to have a medical approval, if you want to fly Solo or in the case you want to obtain your flying license.

It is possible to undergo the aviation medical examination at several locations. The validity of the medical statement is age-depending. The cost of this examination is about Euro 300,-.

The aviation training consists of a theoretical and a practical part. From the first lesson on, you will have controls, make turns independently and learn to climb and descent. After two lessons you perform your first independent take-off and after about 4 lessons you make your first independent landing. Thereafter you can, in about 12 -15 lessons, depending on your progress, , make your first solo flight! In minimal 30 flight hours in your logbook, you are in principle ready for the LAPL examination. For a PPL you need minimal 45 flight hours. The documentations and books concerning the practical part cost Euro 44,50.

During the practical training a fixed program is completed, whereby you can decide the frequency of your lessons yourself. The lessons are done with a Cessna 150, 152, 172, eventually with your own plane. You pay per minute. The lessons last mostly 40-60 minutes. The amount, that you pay for a lesson, is including the instructor and the landing tax.

Once a week, on Thursday night theory lessons are given from 19.30 to 22.30 hours. This course lasts about 9 months and the following subjects are instructed:

  • Aviation regulations
  • Operational procedures
  • General knowledge of aircraft
  • The principles of aviation
  • Execution and planning of the flight
  • Meteorology
  • Navigation
  • Human performance and limitations
  • Radiotelephone VFR (Visual Flight Rules)

You may start the theoretical training, also the practice, when and as you like it. For the theoretical examination, you can apply per subject at the Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen (CBR) under supervision of "Inspectie Leefomgeving en Transport", Division Aviation. This can be done every month in various places in The Netherlands. All theoretical subjects have to be succesfull within 18 months. The practical training LAPL or PPL has to be finished with a practical  exam at least 24 months after full completion of the theory.
